Q. Can I use my restraint on an air plane?

A. Some airlines operating under Australia Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) accept child restraints that comply with the Australian Standard. These include Qantas, Jetstar, Virgin Blue, and the regional airlines. These airlines should accept your seat without question although some Airlines have required the seat to be checked for fit the day before. Width of the child restraint may be more of a concern for smaller aircraft used in regional service. It is best to always check with the airline.

Unlike seats made in USA our seats do not have a statement “Suitable for use in aircraft” as our standard does not have this requirement. Many airlines will look for this statement as it is accepted by the USA Federal Aviation Authority. All airlines should accept the CASA acceptance of Australian child restraints but the on board airline staff are not necessarily aware of the acceptance.

Child restraints that are not suitable for aircraft use are Baby Safety Capsule and any Baby Carrier that requires the use of a base, Booster seats and Booster Cushions, Child Safety Harnesses, Series 3 Car seat.

The tether or upper anchorage strap does not need to be attached although Qantas do have dedicated seats where child restraints can be fitted and the tether or upper anchorage strap connected to straps fitted to the aircraft.

Airlines may be concerned as to the location of a rearward facing child restraint as this may limit access to seats available.

Airlines will assist with you using a child restraint but their understanding of child restraints may be limited.

You will need to book and pay for a seat to use your child restraint. Check with your airline or travel agent.

Airlines do provide an additional strap for very young children and babies and that uses the parent’s seat belt and does not require an extra seating position.

Some airlines do provide child restraints for use in their aircraft. Check with your travel agent.

We can provide a letter that indicates compliance with FAA requirement that has been accepted by airlines but has also been rejected. Please enquire with our Customer Service if such a letter is needed.
