Standard tested to: AS/NZS1754:2010 Installation: The Maxi Rider is installed with a top tether strap in booster mode and the top tether strap plus the vehicle’s lap sash belt in toddler mode. Introduction The Safe-n-Sound Maxi Rider AHR is a forward facing seat with a built-in harness that converts to a booster seat. The Maxi Rider ‘grows with your child’ - accommodates a baby as young as six months old right through to a six to eight year old. The current model of the Maxi Rider AHR boasts a number of new features, one being thicker side wings for added side impact protection. The active head restraint (AHR) is adjustable, which provides correct positioning for head protection as your child grows. Clearly printed on the side of the seat padding are shoulder height markers. These markers make it easy to determine when each child is ready to move into the Maxi Rider AHR. When the shoulders reach the bottom marker this means the child is now at a suitable height to use the Maxi Rider AHR, usually at six months of age. When the shoulders reach the middle marker this indicates that it’s time to convert the seat to booster mode, usually at 4 years of age. Finally, once the shoulders reach the top marker the child has outgrown the seat, approximately six to eight years of age. Shoulder Height Markers My four-year-old son has moved from the built-in harness mode to booster mode now his shoulder height has gone above the seat’s middle marker. He’s approximately 17kgs and 104cms tall and he finds the seat quite comfortable using the car’s lap sash seat belt and the Maxi Rider Slideguard clip. Harness Mode/Booster Mode The Maxi Rider’s built-in harness is used for children who are approximately six months to four years old after which time the seat converts to booster mode using the car’s lap sash seat belt. Once the seat is converted to booster mode the built-in harness conveniently stows away beneath the seat padding. There is an option to purchase an add-on harness that is suitable for use in booster mode. The add-on harness must be either the Safe-n-Sound Protecta Plus harness series 220/2010 or the Babylove Ezygo Harness series BL220/2010. Whether you attach an add-on harness or not, you must always use the Slideguard Clip when using the seat in booster mode. The Slideguard Clip slips easily over the lap part of the car’s lap sash seat belt or add-on harness (between the legs) and prevents the child from slipping under the belt, or ‘submarining’, in an accident, which can cause abdominal injuries.. Seat Dimensions The Maxi Rider AHR has a handy recline foot at the rear of the seat offering an upright or reclined position. My son prefers to relax back into his seat so we have the seat set to recline. The Recline Foot is pulled outwards to unlock it and once it’s rotated to the preferred position pushes back in to lock in place. Recline Foot - Reclined Position Recline Foot - Upright Position The Maxi Rider AHR is quite a wide seat and this should be kept in mind if three seats need to be installed across the back seat. Dimensions Upright: Height: 71cms to 78cms Depth: 37cms Width: 48cms Dimensions Reclined: Height: 65cms to 71cms Depth: 46cms Width: 48cms The seat is approximately 6.5 kgs Ease of Installation and Use Prior to Installing It’s important the headrest, harness straps and crotch buckle are all at the correct heights before installing the seat and therefore you need to place your child in the seat and adjust things accordingly first. I found the most accurate results for my son in terms of his shoulder height and subsequent headrest height were determined with the seat actually in the car in our chosen reclined position. Care must be taken to stabilise the seat whilst determining the correct fit. Adjusting the Headrest The headrest must be adjusted prior to attempting to install the seat. First you must remove the harness straps then at the rear of the seat release the metal lever. Once the lever is pulled down the headrest is now unlocked. Next you need to grasp the actual headrest and pull it upwards to the required height. It’s important that the harness straps, harness strap slots and the slots in the seat back all are aligned according to the detailed instructions in the installation booklet. To lock the headrest in place you need to rotate upwards the metal lever at the rear of the seat. When adjusting the height of the headrest for booster mode ensure the sash guide is level with or slightly above the shoulder. The headrest must be set at the highest position if you choose to use the booster mode add-on Protecta Plus child harness. Toddler /In-Built Harness Mode Fitting the seat in toddler mode requires the car’s lap sash seat belt to be inserted through slots between the seat trim and the seat back. The Maxi-Rider has clear markings to ensure correct and easy installation of the belt. The Upper Anchorage Strap is then adjusted and connected to the car’s anchor fitting. Adjusting the harness straps is made easy with the Harness Adjustment push-button at the front of the seat. Harness Mode - Feed seat belt between seat back and seat trim. Easy to use push button harness adjuster. Child/Booster Mode Fitting the seat in booster mode requires the in-built harness to be stored under the seat cover and the upper anchorage strap to be fitted the same as toddler mode. Once the child is seated the car’s lap sash belt is secured across the body. The Maxi Rider has bright red seat belt path labels that ensure the correct placement of the belt under the armrests and on the child’s thighs. The Slideguard clip is then attached to the crotch buckle and placed over the lap part of the lap sash seat belt. The sash part of the seat belt is placed through the built-in sash guide in the headrest ensuring the belt passes across the shoulders and chest. If the sash is riding up across your child’s neck or slipping off the shoulder this is a telltale sign that the headrest height is not correct. Thoroughly checking your child’s shoulder height before installing the seat is worth doing to ensure a smooth installation. Child Comfort My four-year-old son has commented several times that his seat is comfortable and he regularly uses the deep side wings to rest his head. Although the wings are quite deep his line of sight is still good. The seat accommodates his above average height well and the plush padding offers him plenty of support and comfort. The Maxi Rider comes with armrests for elbow support. The armrests rotate upwards, which makes it easier to fit the car’s seat belt in booster mode. There is plenty of plush padding to make even long trips comfortable and with the Recline Foot the seat can be adjusted to suit each child’s preference. Accessories Audio Pleasure! The Maxi Rider AHR comes with speakers built into the headrest. With a netted pocket attached to the side of the seat it’s easy to plug an mp3 player in to the speaker cable and store it in the mesh pocket. Built-in speakers - Plug in an MP3 player! Storage On each side of the Maxi Rider there is a built-in cup holder that rotates out from under the side of the seat. A protective mat also comes with the seat that not only covers the base of the car seat but also the back to prevent wear and tear. In addition, the mat comes with a pocket at the front to store small items. Full length messy mat with front pocket. In booster mode the in-built harness is stored neatly away under the seat trim. The Slideguard converter is also stored away under the seat trim when the seat is used in toddler mode. The excess length of the Anchorage strap is neatly rolled up out of the way. Moveable armrests. Abundance of safety features. Deep side wings for maximum head protection. Conclusion The Maxi Rider AHR really does ‘grow with your child’ starting from as young as six months old right through to 6-8 years, which makes it excellent value for money. This is an impressive seat with an abundance of safety features such as the Slideguard clip, seat belt guides, headrest adjuster and deep side wings to name but a few. Plush fabrics in an assortment of colours along with plenty of accessories make the Maxi Rider AHR a very enjoyable seat for little passengers.
